Cold, so cold; such nice sweet cold.  The heater just turned on.  My flat mate should be home in about 10 minutes.  I'll put some tay on for it in 5 minutes.  It should be hot, steeped, and ready for half and half.  Poor thing's got to walk a block and a half in it to get home, after waiting in it for the bus to arrive at the transfer station.

Wish we had more cream.  The truck was late at Trader Joe's, and they only had one pint of cream left, and I had to get extra half and half to compensate.  Hopefully next trip will be better.

Cream Of Mushroom Soup

Ingredients

5 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms

5 ounces fresh portobello mushrooms

5 ounces fresh cremini (or porcini) mushrooms

1 tablespoon good olive oil

1/4 pound (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, divided

1 cup chopped yellow onion (I slice mine really thin)

1 carrot, chopped

1 teaspoon minced thyme leaves, divided

salt to taste

Freshly ground black pepper to taste

2 cups chopped leeks, white and light green parts (2 leeks)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup dry white wine

1 cup half-and-half

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

Clean the mushrooms by wiping them with a dry paper towel. Don't wash them! Separate the stems, trim off any bad parts, and coarsely chop the stems. Slice the mushroom caps 1/4-inch thick and, if there are big, cut them into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.

To make the stock, heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of the butter in a large pot. Add the chopped mushroom stems, the onion, carrot, the sprig of thyme, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and cook over medium-low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, until the vegetables are soft. Add 6 cups water, bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. Strain, reserving the liquid. You should have about 4 1/2 cups of stock. If not, add some water.

Meanwhile, in another large pot, heat the remaining 1/4 pound of butter and add the leeks. Cook over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, until the leeks begin to brown. Add the sliced mushroom caps and cook for 10 minutes, or until they are browned and tender. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Add the white wine and stir for another minute, scraping the bottom of the pot. Add the mushroom stock, minced thyme leaves, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add the half-and-half, cream, and parsley, season with salt and pepper, to taste, and heat through but do not boil. Serve hot.

It was 77° F. here, yesterday.   November 20, 2015.  Shoreline was 71°.  It is MISERABLE in this flat if it's over like 70° outside.  We used to have a huge yucca tree protecting part of the room not only from the sun, but the wind.  The cut it down.  I threw a bunch of castor seeds down, and two years later we are getting some shade from that, but not like before.  The window also gets pinged all day from exploding seeds, and so do we on occasion when we're on the balcony, or the window is open.  Trust me.  It does NOT feel good to get hit by and exploded castor seed.  Thank the gods I only get hit two or three times a year on average.

Everything is so strange, I'm surprised my head hasn't exploded yet.  News, coincidences, axis tilt, a promise from long ago, instincts, a touch of Akashic Knowledge, having become a cat magnet and a ton of other things are making my head spin.  I'm also so tired, fed up, and sick of my self-induced enslavement regarding those chains of my own design that I would really like to take a chop saw to, but hey!  At least I know each day brings me one day closer to everything I want.

So obsessed with the passage of time, I am.  Less than 25.5 months for era's nadir, provided mine sources are correct.  Man, I've been doing these countdowns forever.  They never amount to anything.  Will this one?

Days are too warm, nights are kinda normal.  How many years is that without a real winter, now?  At least three, maybe more.  Weather has been so static locally, and more extreme everywhere else.

We also have a broken printer & need to replace it so we can print up resumes again.
I am also a musician & recording engineer, & part of the local East Bay music scene. I need some of the money to have some good recording equipment cleaned & restored, because those items got some heavy soot deposits from a fire in an apartment below our old place in October 2007. So we have also been disaster victims. Before this happened I was helping other musicians produce albums, by doing recording on location, working with recordings they supplied, mixing, editing, & mastering. All 4 of my aged computers need something fixed in them, too. Without repairs I will not be able to do any new work. I have the goal to be able to do this all again, & with survival will be able to offer services to my local community of musicians, as well as give donors free copies of my own works, if they like what I do.

We need at least $5,000 of the amount being requested by the end of 2015 to safely make it into early 2016. If a larger amount comes in sooner, then more of the things I listed can be taken care of.

This means a lot to me because we always helped others we have known when we could, we want to be able to keep what we have & be able to help again, we need to survive.

We will be very thankful if this succeeds because we will not meet a premature ending."
